Oven Baked Meatballs

  INGREDIENTS:

 For the Meatballs:

– 1 pound ground beef (80/20 blend is ideal)

– 1/2 pound ground pork (optional, adds extra flavor and juiciness)

– 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (plain or Italian seasoned)

– 1/4 cup milk

– 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

– 1 large egg

– 3 cloves garlic, minced

– 1/4 cup fresh parsley, finely chopped (or 1 tablespoon dried parsley)

– 1 teaspoon salt

– 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

– 1 teaspoon dried oregano

– 1 teaspoon dried basil

– 1/2 teaspoon onion powder

– 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional, for a bit of heat)

For Serving:

– Marinara sauce (store-bought or homemade)

– Fresh basil or parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)

– Cooked pasta, crusty bread, or a fresh salad

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Preheat the Oven:

– Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.

2. Prepare the Meatball Mixture:

– In a small bowl, combine the breadcrumbs and milk. Let them soak for a few minutes until the breadcrumbs are softened.

– In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork (if using), soaked breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, egg, minced garlic, chopped parsley, salt, black pepper, dried oregano, dried basil, onion powder, and crushed red pepper flakes (if using).

– Mix the ingredients gently with your hands or a spatula until just combined. Be careful not to overmix, as this can make the meatballs tough.

3. Form the Meatballs:

– Using a spoon or a small ice cream scoop, portion out the meat mixture and roll it into balls, about 1 1/2 inches in diameter. Place the meatballs on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them evenly apart.

4. Bake the Meatballs:

– Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes, or until the meatballs are cooked through and browned on the outside. The internal temperature should reach 165°F (74°C).

5. Serve:

– Serve the meatballs with marinara sauce, either on the side or tossed together. Garnish with fresh basil or parsley if desired.

– Pair with pasta, crusty bread, or a fresh salad for a complete meal.

Tips:

– Meat Choice: A combination of ground beef and pork adds extra flavor and juiciness to the meatballs. You can also use ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option.

– Cheese: For a different twist, try using Pecorino Romano or a mix of cheeses instead of Parmesan.

– Make Ahead: These meatballs can be made ahead of time and frozen for later use. Freeze them on a baking sheet until solid, then transfer to a freezer-safe bag or container.

Oven Baked Meatballs are a delicious and versatile dish, perfect for serving with pasta, in a sub sandwich, or as a party appetizer. Baking the meatballs ensures they are tender and juicy, while also being easy to prepare and clean up. Enjoy!
